Risk Management

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, certain activities may need to be adapted to maintain the safest environment possible for all activities. Please obey any provincial healthcare directives released before engaging in any of the activities suited to larger groups of participants. It is imperative to put the health of the participants, parents, caregivers, and teachers first.
We encourage adapting any of the activities to suit the needs and requirements necessary to maintain a safe environment.

Risk Management for Activities

Most of the activities will require a large clear area such as a gymnasium, a back/front yard, or an open area in a local park or greenspace. Make sure that the area chosen is clear of any possible hazards such as chairs, tables, benches, rocks, garbage and other items that could cause the participants to trip. Consider the type of terrain and whether it will be suitable for any and all participants and the way they move around. Is the route to this area safe and easy to navigate for all?

If leading the group on a walk, check the route a day earlier to ensure there is no unexpected road work, that all crossings have curb ramps (particularly if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or other mobility device), and that it is a manageable distance for all participants. If it is winter, consider how ice/snow will affect the mobility of participants.

Be sure to establish some ground rules with the participants. Identify your behaviour expectations when they are listening to instructions and participating in the activities.

Before taking a crew away from the home, school, or community centre, set rules for expected individual and crew behaviour so that walks and activities in the community are safe and respectful. Consider asking participants to:

  • Stay with the crew at all times (and not run ahead);

  • Have an assigned number in a sequence that they can call out as you are all walking.
